The selection of a new name and definition for the condition formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been a difficult and agreed-upon process, given the wide variation in concepts among different stakeholders worldwide, it was necessary for any new proposal to be better than the current one and sufficiently superior to the existing nomenclature to improve knowledge and understanding of the disease and to facilitate further research.
