Hepatic iron overload occurs when the transferrin-binding capacity for this metal is exceeded, causing non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) to circulate in the blood and deposit in the liver, triggering ferroptosis due to the generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation.
